British Museum opens new chapter on restitution debate
A long-rumoured lending framework with Athens has finally been confirmed in outline.
The British Museum has confirmed, in outline at least, the framework of a long-rumoured lending arrangement with the Acropolis Museum that will see significant portions of the Parthenon Sculptures shown in Athens on a rotating basis.
The agreement stops well short of restitution. Legal ownership remains with the trustees, and the framework is structured explicitly as a cultural partnership rather than a return.
